Google says keywords in the TLD part of your URL are ignored for ranking purposes


If you ever wondered about all those new fancy TLD’s that contain certain keywords for a ranking boost, then you

might want to reconsider as in a recent article from Search Engine Land, Google confirmed that they do not take that into

consideration at all. Here is a little snippet of that article below.

 

Google’s John Mueller confirmed yesterday in a Google Hangout that keyword-rich TLDs, such as the new top-level domains that have keywords in them — like .LIVE, .NEWS, .ATTORNEY and so on — do not count for ranking purposes. Mueller said Google completely ignores that for ranking purposes.

He said this at the 12:45 minute mark into the hangout: “The TLD is not something we take into account there,” he said, and added that they “completely” ignore the words in the TLD portion of the URL.

There was some controversy recently around a sponsored article published here on Search Engine Land, Can moving to a new TLD boost search rankings? That article showed how one lawyer switched from a .COM to a .ATTORNEY domain and saw a nice lift in organic traffic.

Both Mueller and Gary Illyes from Google said this is not true and urged webmasters not to switch from their current TLDs to the new TLDs for “vague promises” of ranking boosts.

Google updates Penguin, says now runs in real-time within the core search algorithm


If you noticed some SERP fluctuation yesterday, It finally looks like it is Penguin. Google says it now will run in Realtime within its core search algorithm.  Below is a snippet from Search Engine Land about the latest on Penguin 4.0.

 

After a nearly two-year wait, Google’s Penguin algorithm has finally been updated again. It’s the fourth major release, making this Penguin 4.0. It’s also the last release of this type, as Google now saysPenguin is a real-time signal processed within its core search algorithm.

Penguin is a filter designed to capture sites that are spamming Google’s search results in ways that Google’s regular spamming systems might not detect. Introduced in 2012, it has operated on a periodic basis.

In other words, the Penguin filter would run and catch sites deemed spammy. Those sites would remain penalised even if they improved and changed until the next time the filter ran,which could take months.

The last Penguin update, Penguin 3.0, happened on October 17, 2014. Any sites hit by it have waited nearly two years for the chance to be free.

Those long delays are now to be a thing of the past, according to Google. With this latest release, Penguin becomes real-time. As Google recrawls and reindexes pages — which happens constantly — those pages will be assessed by the Penguin filter. Pages will be caught and/or freed by Penguin as part of this regular process.

Everything you need to know about Google’s ‘Possum’ algorithm update


If you were wondering if there were any changes in the Local SEO scene, then read more about the latest Possum Algo.

 

For those of you wondering what “Possum” is, it’s the name we in the local search community decided to give the massive Local algorithm update that happened September 1, 2016.

Phil Rozeksuggested the name, pointing outthat itis fitting since many business owners think their Google My Business listings are gone, when in fact they are not. They have just been filtered—they’re playing possum.

All the evidence seems to indicate this particular update only impacted ranking in the 3-pack and Local Finder (AKA the local results or Google Maps results). There is talk of another update that happened right after, whichimpacted organic results.

I believe the main purpose of the update was to diversify the local results and also prevent spam from rankingas well.

Based on the dozens of ranking reports I’ve analyzed, I would say this is the biggest update we have seen in Local since Pigeon in 2014. One of the main things that updated was Google’s filter that applies to the local results.

AMP — Accelerated Mobile Pages — begin global rollout in Google mobile search results


Google is starting to move ahead with their AMP rollout.  Here is a snippet of the story below on Search Engine Land.

 

In August, Google announced Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) would be moving beyond Top Stories into the main organic mobile search results. Today, AMP officially rolls out broadly in mobile search.

Rudy Galfi, Google’s lead product manager for AMP, told me that the global rollout would be complete by the end of the year. He reiterated that this does not represent a rankings change. AMP pages won’t get a special boost in mobile results.

However, when there are two versions of a page, Google will prefer and link to the AMP version. AMP pages open within the AMP viewer and load much faster than conventional web pages — typically in less than a second.

Galfi wouldn’t share specific user-response data but told me, “We’re seeing great user response.” He also said that Google has been “humbled” by the industry’s response and adoption of AMP.

There are now more than 600 million AMP-enabled documents, which is apparently up from 150 million this summer. These documents are distributed in more than 230 “locales” and written in more than 100 languages. The list of companies embracing AMP is long, including Bing, WordPress, Reddit, Ebay and Shopify, among numerous other publishers.

Google Continues to Display Quality Score Data Until October 10


Well it seems Google has pushed the date back for displaying Quality Score data. Read the full story at SEJ.

 

It was reported last month Google will be returning null quality scores for new and underperforming keywords in AdWords as of September 12th. If you have logged in to your AdWords account lately you may have noticed you still have quality score information for new and underperforming keywords — and no, that’s not an accident.

Google has pushed the date back to October 10th. That’s the new date when Google will be taking away quality score information. Why push back the date? Google explains in a post on Google+:

”To give advertisers more time to review their reports, filters, rules, and scripts that rely on Quality Scores, null Quality Scores will now roll out the week of October 10th, 2016.”

Google downplays the Google algorithm ranking update this week as “normal fluctuations”


Earlier this month, we reported about significant chatter around a Google algorithm update. Well, it looks like we have another update to report to you this week.

On Tuesday of this week, there were some early signals of a Google update. Those signals intensified Thursday and seem to just be getting stronger day by day.

In short, the webmaster and SEO community is confident that there was an algorithm change with the Google organic search results this week. Not only are the SEO forums and communities discussing it, the tracking tools from Mozcast, Accuranker, RankRanger and others have also shown significant fluctuations in the organic rankings in Google.

Google’s PR team wouldn’t directly comment. Instead, they pointed to a tweet by John Mueller from Google: “nothing specific, sorry — we’re always working to improve things!” This is in response to questions about an algorithm update. John also said this morning on Twitter that these are normal fluctuations:

Google AdWords Now Allows One Email for Multiple Accounts – Search Engine Journal


For managers of multiple Google AdWords accounts, logging in and out of each one could be a time-consuming productivity killer. Google has made a change to that, with the ability to use one email address to log in to multiple accounts.

Gone are the days when you would need to have one email address per account. Now you can connect up to five AdWords accounts to one email. The option to add additional accounts can be accessed through the ‘Manage AdWords accounts’ screen in the main menu.

Adding users to an AdWords account has gotten easier by skipping the email verification step. Now, when a user is added to an account, they can start accessing it right away. One less email clogging up the inbox.
